Why I hate reading

For as long as I can remember I’ve always hated reading. I’m that guy that always thinks the movie is better than the book. When I watch anime, I watch dubs. I just think reading is boring most of the time. I only like reading about things that interest like sports, politics, and science. I used to think I hated reading because I was dumb but then I figured out it just wasn’t something I enjoyed doing. I do understand the importance of reading and where I would be without it.

My family always let me know how important reading was from a young age. They would make me read short scriptures from the bible and they taught me about how slaves would be punished for something  like reading so I’ve always had the respect for learning how to read because it’s something that African Americans literally fought for. I respect what people fought for and I am very grateful but every time I start reading my eyelids get heavy and I fall asleep and then I just start reading just to say I did it and I won’t understand anything I read.

I am not opposed to reading and I understand that it is an important skill to learn especially during the developmental stage of life, but I also believe that there are other ways to teach than to make a kid read. You should teach kids in different ways because everyone thinks differently. There have been way too many times when I’ve had a teacher say sit down and read this instead of her teaching the material and a lot of my classmates struggled with that while others didn’t mind. Reading is a skill that I will teach my kids at a young age but I will also teach them other ways to learn and see which one better fits them.
